The New England Patriots officially cut running back Antonio Gibson on Monday, and the decision quickly extended well beyond team facilities. Gibson is currently recovering from a torn ACL that cut his 2025 season short after just five games.
He had no guaranteed money left on the final year of his three-year deal, and the Patriots released him to clear just over $3 million in cap space. Hours after the move was confirmed, his wife, Victoria Gibson, posted a video on social media publicly asking the Patriots to bring her husband back.

Victoria Gibson, who has been a recognizable presence on social media throughout her husband’s time in New England, went directly to the public with her appeal after the release. The video shows her openly asking the Patriots to reconsider cutting Gibson while he is still in the middle of recovering from the knee injury.
Kleiman captioned the post: “We have never seen anything like this.”

It is genuinely hard to recall an NFL spouse going this public, this directly, over a roster decision. The video drew massive attention, partly because of how raw and unfiltered it was. Victoria has built a real presence around the Patriots community, so this was not coming from a stranger to the fanbase.
Gibson suffered the torn ACL during a kickoff return in the Week 5 win over the Buffalo Bills, a game where he had already been one of the best returners in the league. Before the injury, he recorded a 90-yard kickoff return touchdown against the Miami Dolphins in Week 2, earning AFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors. Being let go mid-recovery makes the timing feel harder.

The Patriots’ Backfield Depth Makes Gibson’s Roster Spot Difficult to Justify
New England’s decision is easier to understand. The team still has Rhamondre Stevenson, TreVeyon Henderson, Terrell Jennings, Elijah Mitchell, and Lan Larison under contract or signed to futures deals. Gibson would have been competing for a third-string spot while still rehabilitating.
With the NFL Scouting Combine underway in Indianapolis, the Patriots will likely look at younger options.
Gibson should attract interest as a versatile, cost-effective option who can contribute in the running game and on special teams. Victoria’s video may not change the Patriots’ minds, but it will certainly keep her husband’s name in the conversation heading into free agency.
