“Still Early”: Pittsburgh Steelers Mum on Left Tackle’s Training Camp Status

Pittsburgh Steelers left tackle Broderick Jones Jr. had a rough 2025 campaign, allowing 23 pressures and six sacks through 11 games before a scary injury ended it. He suffered a significant season-ending neck injury in Week 12 against the Chicago Bears and later underwent surgery in late December. Since neck injuries are very serious and tricky to recover from, Jones’s NFL career might be at risk.

During Tuesday’s press conference at the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine, Omar Khan provided a brief injury update on Broderick Jones Jr., as reported by Mike DeFabo of The Athletic. The general manager said that although the left tackle is working hard in his recovery from the significant neck injury, it’s still early to tell if Jones will be available for the start of training camp, which begins in late July. Khan did not specify if Jones’s injury is career-threatening, as they are still monitoring his progress.

Omar Khan when asked if Broderick Jones will be back from his neck injury in time for camp: “He had a significant injury, and we’re monitoring how he progresses. I know he’s working hard. It’s still early in the process, but that’s certainly something that we’re monitoring.”

Since Broderick Jones Jr. was a first-round pick and just completed his third season in the NFL, he has a fully guaranteed 5th-year option for the 2027 season attached to his contract, with the decision due in May. Because he played 75% of greater snaps twice, he classifies under Tier 2, the playtime tier. Tier 2 is worth approximately $20.497 million. Given his struggles and recent injury, the Steelers will likely decline his club option, making him an unrestricted free agent next offseason.
