Liverpool are desperate to hold onto Dominik Szoboszlai amid interest from Real Madrid, with the Reds working on extending the Hungarian’s contract.
As things stand, Szoboszlai’s contract will expire in June 2028, but a player of his quality cannot be allowed to enter the last two years of his deal, much less its final year.
This season, the 25-year-old has been Liverpool’s best player. Despite playing a third of his games at right back, Szoboszlai has 10 goals and 7 assists.
Against Nottingham Forest, Liverpool once again witnessed another pivotal moment from the midfielder with his late cross into the box to Virgil van Dijk, leading to Alexis Mac Allister’s 97th-minute winner. The Reds did not deserve the win, but moments of class from a player like Szoboszlai are how teams overperform.
With Champions League football at stake, Liverpool desperately need players who will help them perform higher than the expected level.
Dominik Szoboszlai ‘on course’ to sign new Liverpool deal despite Real Madrid allure
By all accounts, Szoboszlai is a childhood Real Madrid fan with recent images posted to X revealing that he had a backpack with Los Blancos heraldry during his days at RB Leipzig.

A new report from teamTALK claims their sources have revealed that “Dominik Szoboszlai is on course to sign a new Liverpool deal with a timeline set on when a new deal could be announced.
“Szoboszlai’s only focus is on Liverpool and that his priority remains on negotiating a new deal, likely to see him elevated to among the club’s best-paid players.”
Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk signed massive new contracts last year, and now extending Szoboszlai’s deal is of equal importance.
Comparisons to Steven Gerrard are, strangely, not wide of the mark. The former Leipzig star is hard-working, versatile, technically gifted and a natural-born leader. Much like Stevie G, the no.8 leads by example rather than barking orders to his teammates.

Trusted reporter plays down Real Madrid interest
Reliable reporter David Lynch, who has inside sources at Liverpool, has moved to downplay Madrid interest in Szoboszlai
“At the moment, there’s absolutely nothing in it,” Lynch told Anfield Index. “It’s not like people are saying someone’s going to come for him, I think it’s all spiralled from someone [Hungary manager Marco Rossi] saying he wanted to play for Real Madrid.
“Well, do Real Madrid want him, do they need him, are they looking for someone of that profile at the moment, what kind of fee would they be asked to pay given he’s got two years left on his contract at the end of the season and Liverpool want to tie him down to another?
“We’ll see, but I haven’t heard anything about actual interest in him or that he’s going to go anywhere, so it’s not one that I think it’s worth wasting any time worrying about really.”
Supporters should feel comforted by this information and hopefully, there will be a contract announcement to celebrate soon.
