As elusive as WR Tyreek Hill could be during his prime, Omar Khan was just as evasive when asked if he and the Pittsburgh Steelers had any interest in signing Hill this offseason. In a one-on-one interview with PFT’s Mike Florio, Khan sidestepped Florio’s direct question if the team is considering signing Hill.
“We like the group, I’m not gonna talk about any specific players right now. It’s early,” Khan told Florio.
With Hill officially released by the Miami Dolphins last week, general managers like Khan face no punishment for talking about free agents. Only players currently on a roster are generally viewed as off limits for public comment.
Still, it’s no surprise to see Khan not talk about any player not currently on the Pittsburgh Steelers’ roster. Hill’s situation is a complex one. At 32 and known for his speed, he’s recovering from a brutal knee injury. Hill is adamant he wants to play again, but his effectiveness given his age and injury is an open question. The NFL continues to investigate domestic violence allegations against Hill. If founded, he’ll be subject to the league’s discipline policy of a multi-game suspension.
“We’re evaluating everything,” Khan said when Florio followed up.
Florio has previously advocated for Pittsburgh to consider signing Hill, so it’s no surprise to hear him pose the question in his sit-down with a decision-maker like Khan.
Even Andy Reid, who coached Hill in Kansas City for years, recently avoided a direct answer when asked about reuniting with Hill. Returning to the Chiefs makes plenty of sense given the history and the team’s need for receiver help.
Given Pittsburgh’s bold moves and similar need at the position, Hill can’t be completely discounted. But the Steelers have a long list of younger and healthier names without the baggage Hill would bring. Not to mention, his injury is likely to limit his offseason involvement, putting him behind the eight-ball of a new offense like Pittsburgh’s and hurting the chemistry with Aaron Rodgers, should he return for a second season with the Steelers.
Khan’s answer wasn’t taking Hill off the table. But hopefully, the Steelers steer clear of him and set sights on other options.
