Omar Marmoush shock link – Manchester City player could sign for Barcelona

Barcelona are considering a move for Manchester City forward Omar Marmoush as they plan a summer striker signing.

According to Sport, the Catalan club have already defined their priority positions for next season. A new No.9 sits at the top of that list. However, the market is thin and prices are rising fast.

Julián Alvarez remains their dream target. Yet Atletico Madrid would demand around €150m (£130m), a figure Barcelona will not approach. As a result, alternatives are under discussion, and Marmoush is one of the names admired internally.

Why situation at Manchester City encourages transfer

Marmoush joined Manchester City in January 2025 from Eintracht Frankfurt for €75m (£65m). Pep Guardiola approved the deal after tracking his Bundesliga form closely.

At Frankfurt, the Egyptian established himself as one of the league’s most productive attackers. Barcelona’s recruitment team also followed him during that spell. They believe he fits Hansi Flick’s attacking model, given his mobility and ability to link play.

However, his role at City has been limited. Erling Haaland remains untouchable as the central striker. Consequently, Marmoush has struggled to secure regular starts, and sometimes forced to play out wide.

He has delivered when coming off the bench, but opportunities have been scarce this season. In addition, he missed a month due to the Africa Cup of Nations. As a result, his overall numbers look modest.

There were already exit rumours in January. Sport report that he would prioritise a project offering greater visibility and consistent minutes.

Importantly, Barcelona are not the only club tracking his situation. In recent weeks, Marmoush has also been linked withTottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa and Galatasaray, adding further uncertainty to his future.

The end of his spell at City?

Barcelona are described as “positioned” if Marmoush asks to leave this summer. Importantly, he is not their first-choice target. Still, if the Alvarez move collapses, attention could shift quickly.

From City’s perspective, the key question is valuation. Marmoush cost €75m (£65m) just over a year ago. However, Sport claim he could be available for less than that fee if Guardiola approves a sale.

That scenario would raise eyebrows. Selling at a discount so soon would suggest City see him as surplus to requirements behind Haaland.

For now, there is no formal approach. Barcelona are monitoring the situation closely. Much will depend on whether Marmoush pushes for an exit once the season ends.

If he does, Manchester City may face competition from England and Turkey for his signature.
