Everton will need to add more goals to their starting XI in the summer with a £30m striker reported to be a top target.
Everton are still pushing for European football in a congested Premier League table that looks like it will go down to the wire.
What might have made a difference in terms of home form and the difference between drawing and losing or winning and drawing games has been the odd goal here and there. In a league where everyone can beat everyone, the Toffees have done well to get as high up the table as they have with a squad that was already small and has been battered by injuries and suspensions throughout the campaign.
Everton learn Liam Delap transfer fate
In Beto and Thierno Barry, Everton have a very specific type of striker with the January acquisition of Tyrique George providing a different option for David Moyes. Reports suggest that they are keen on signing £30m Chelsea striker Liam Delap who is a “top target” in the summer. According to Pete O’Rourke of Football Insider though, Liam Rosenior isn’t keen to lose the young striker.
The former Sky Sports man claimed that: “The new boss is set to stand in the way of Everton making a move for Delap, as sources have indicated to Football Insider that he wants three high-quality strikers to choose from for next term.”
On the £30m valuation of Delap, O’Rourke continued: “The manager’s stance could even see that price tag raised further in a bid to fend off the interest, and that would seriously test the Merseysiders’ resolve as to how much they actually want the player.”
Delap red flag Everton should be wary of
Everton do need more fire power and Delap has shown that he can be a difference maker in the Premier League even though he only has two league goals so far for his new club. His biggest problem since signing for Chelsea has been staying fit, which is something that Moyes, after seeing a similar issue with Dominic Calvert-Lewin, should be wary of. With 15 games missed already due to injury, the 23-year old has hardly been robust.
If they are spending a large percentage of their transfer budget, risk must be kept to a minimum. If they are spending the sort of money that is designed to improve the starting XI, then they need to be signing the sort of player with a track record of playing 45 or more games a season without any problems. Availability is an often-underrated quality in the modern game.
