'Always': Why Sam Allardyce thinks Chelsea could sell Cole Palmer to Man United

During the January transfer window, Cole Palmer was linked with a bizarre move to Manchester United, and Sam Allardyce believes a deal could materialise in due course.

Reports emerged that suggested Palmer was unhappy at Chelsea and potentially open to a move to Manchester United. Liam Rosenior poured water on the flames, saying Palmer is “untouchable”.

But the links between Palmer and Man United continue to arise. John Obi Mikel said this week that he thinks Palmer is unhappy at Stamford Bridge, with Man United stealing a march in the race for fourth.

Even more so, Palmer’s best pal believes it is realistic to think the England star could move to Old Trafford. The same friend who accompanied Palmer on his holidays early last week, jetting off to Dubai.

Allardyce thinks Chelsea would sell Palmer to make a profit

Of course, Palmer joined Chelsea in the summer of 2023 for a fee of just £40m. If Chelsea were to sell the Euro 2024 final goalscorer now, it would come as an enormous profit – easily over the £100m mark.

Chelsea fans, however, would be furious, as would gaffer Rosenior. Yet, Sam Allardyce told the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast that he believes Chelsea would sell because the club is run to make a profit.

“I think Chelsea would always sell at the right price. It’s whether Manchester United have the money that Chelsea would want, but it would certainly be a big signing for Manchester United,” Allardyce thinks.

“What is he now? 22? 23? He’s just the right age, five, six, seven, eight years in him. This is a particular talent that shone from day one at Chelsea when he left City. Now, there’s been a bit of a lull.

“Because of the injury, but he will get back to where he was sooner rather than later. He’s a tremendous talent and I often think that Chelsea in their infrastructure, are always in a position to make a profit.”

Why Liam Rosenior has been surprised by Cole Palmer

The former Man City star has sparkled under Rosenior despite admitting himself he is far from 100% fit at the moment. An injury he can play with, but it means he must be managed and can’t go full throttle.

There have been comparisons!

Alan Shearer described the injury as a “horrible situation”. But if Man United do come calling in the summer, Rosenior will be even more tempted to keep Palmer than he might have been before joining.

Indeed, reports claim that when Rosenior was about to join Chelsea as manager, he and his coaching staff felt Palmer might have an ego. But Rosenior and the rest of his team have been pleasantly surprised.

It comes after Mauricio Pochettino and Jesus Perez raved about Palmer’s mentality and attitude behind the scenes. Whatever Man United offer, Chelsea simply cannot sell Palmer, or the backlash will be real.
