Chelsea’s stance on selling one of their players to Man United or Everton has been revealed.
Man United’s recruitment last summer was excellent, as the Red Devils managed to sign the likes of Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Sesko, and Senne Lammens. All four have worked out well, with the latter both playing big roles in their win against Everton.
United were in the race for Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap, but he ended up making a £30m move to Chelsea instead, and has since struggled, starting just nine matches in the Premier League this season.
Liam Rosenior is reluctant to sell Liam Delap
However, according to Football Insider, Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior is very reluctant to sell Delap in the summer, as he wants three reliable striker options. He currently has two in the form of Delap and Joao Pedro, with Nicolas Jackson set to return from Bayern Munich in the summer.
The report claims that Chelsea has no intention of selling Delap, and the fact that Man United are a rival for Champions League football, if they do, they would likely sell him to someone like Everton instead, who are less of a threat compared to the Red Devils.
Delap has made 18 Premier League appearances in total this season, but he has managed to score just one goal. A stark contrast to last season, when he netted 12 Premier League goals for Ipswich Town.
Do Man United need another striker?
Based on the fact that recently, Michael Carrick has been playing Bryan Mbeumo up front as a false nine, it begs the question of whether they need another striker. Sesko’s form has been impressive recently, and they still have Zirkzee as a depth option.
The only thing that the club may consider is that this season, they haven’t had European football, so they haven’t had any fixture congestion, and so have seen fewer injuries to top players.
Assuming that they qualify for Europe in some form (hopefully the Champions League), they will need to improve their squad depth. If Carrick is appointed permanently, though, and he continues to start Mbuemo up front with Sesko coming off the bench, it would be very difficult for Delap to get himself regular game time, so it could almost be worth him staying at Stamford Bridge for the benefit of his own personal development.
