49ers get bad news on Trent Williams amid looming $39 million decision

The San Francisco 49ers are entering the 2026 offseason with major needs at two spots: wide receiver and pass rusher. Other positions could use help, but receiver and pass rusher are the two biggest needs.

However, there is another big need that could emerge this offseason at offensive tackle. Specifically, the left tackle spot as Trent Williams faces an uncertain future.

And unfortunately for the 49ers, ESPN's Adam Schefter revealed some bad news, as the 49ers and Williams, after contract negotiations, might be heading for a split this offseason, thanks to a $39 million cap figure.

49ers and Trent Williams could part ways amid $39M cap figure

"With five-time All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams scheduled to carry a $39 million cap number this season," Schefter reports, "he and the 49ers currently are struggling to find a contractual solution, per league sources. If the two sides can't bridge their differences in their standoff, Williams could be expected to join this year's free-agent class, making him one of the premier players available."

This is a long update from Schefter, and it might be a bit confusing. But, long-story-short, the 49ers might be cutting Williams this offseason if he and the 49ers cannot agree to a restructured deal.

It's an issue that's been known, but with the deadline coming up in the new league year in March, the 49ers and Williams are still apart in their negotiations.

This report from Schefter indicates a split might be more likely to happen than ever before. San Francisco might have a massive hole at left tackle this offseason.

The 12-time Pro Bowler and five-time All-Pro (3 first-team, 2 second team) could be on his way out this offseason.

The 37-year-old offensive tackle is a future Hall of Famer, and while he's not retiring just yet, his time with the 49ers might be coming to an end this offseason.

Unless Williams and the 49ers reach an agreement on a new deal, the 15-year veteran might be released as the 49ers try to save as much cap space as possible.

If they designated him a post-June 1st cut, the 49ers could save roughly $12 million in cap space this year, and $4 million next year.

Williams' time in San Francisco might be coming to an end, as this report from Schefter is bad news for the 49ers and their fans this offseason.
