t is not a San Francisco 49ers offseason without a little drama. In recent seasons, the 49ers have dealt with drama filled offseasons, from contract standoffs to off-the-field issues with players and everything in between. Last year however, the 49ers went through a relatively drama-free offseason, and came into training camp ready to roll en route to finishing 12-5 and returning to the playoffs after a one year absence.

But barely two weeks into the offseason, the 49ers are dealing with yet another contract standoff. Entering the final season of a revised three-year contract signed ahead of the 2024 season, future Hall of Fame left tackle, Trent Williams, carries a massive $39 million cap number in ’26– which could be very problematic for a 49ers team needing to add pieces at several key spots. Needing to find a solution to Williams’ large cap burden, the two sides are trying to work something out but if they can’t, the 49ers are in trouble.

Williams Could Enter Free Agency This Offseason

ESPN’s Adam Schefter was first to report Williams and the 49ers’ contract situation and said that while the two sides are working on finding a solution, Williams would enter free agency this offseason if nothing is worked out, forcing the 49ers to scramble for an immediate replacement.

“With five-time All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams scheduled to carry a $39 million cap number this season, he and the 49ers currently are struggling to find a contractual solution, per league sources,” Schefter said in a tweet. “If the two sides can’t bridge their differences in their standoff, Williams would be expected to join this year’s free-agent class, making him one of the premier players available.”

If Williams joins free agency, there are several options for the 49ers. They could try and bring Williams back on a cheaper deal but given that he still produces at a high level for his age, Williams will be a hot commodity on the open market and will most likely warrant a bigger deal. The 49ers could also try and sign a new left tackle in free agency or turn to the draft for a solution. But Williams is a star and the top priority for the 49ers is to retain him for 2026.

Williams’ Value to the 49ers

Since his trade to the 49ers ahead of the 2020 season, Williams has continued to evolve into one of the best left tackles, and offensive linemen, of all time. A 12-time Pro Bowler and five-time All-Pro, Williams made seven Pro Bowls and was an All-Pro selection with the team now known as the Washington Commanders, but since joining the 49ers, his Hall of Fame resume only grew. Earning five more Pro Bowl selections and four more All-Pro selections, Williams has been a key cog on the 49ers offensive line for over half a decade and was a key reason why the 49ers made three straight trips to the NFC title game from 2021-23 with a Super Bowl trip in ’23.

And what has been most impressive about Williams’ 49ers career is how he has continued to get better despite getting older. Continuously expressing his desire to play into his 40s, Williams is showing no signs of slowing down and is ready to roll in 2026, whether it’s for the 49ers or not.
