The Detroit Lions made a scheduling announcement on Tuesday, February 24, and it's drawing a strong reaction.
The Detroit Lions are looking ahead to the 2026-27 season, and with that, come some unique news. On Tuesday, February 24, the team announced the news that they’ll one of the participating teams for the NFL’s return to Munich for a regular season game during the 2026 season as part of the NFL International series.
The Detroit Lions will play the game at FC Bayern Munich Stadium, and the game date, kickoff time and opponent are still be announced, according to an official release from the team. To keep up with information on the teams’ trip to Germany, visit the Lions’ official website.
“We are thrilled to be playing internationally and specifically in Munich for the 2026 season,” Detroit Lions president and CEO Rod Wood said in a statement. “As an organization, we have invested greatly in the German market and are excited to play in front of our passionate German fans.”
This game will mark the team’s first return to international play in more than a decade. Of course, the news has people talking.

“It has been a dream of mine to play a game in my mother’s home country of Germany since coming to the league,” St. Brown said in a statement. “I cannot wait to play in front of the incredible fans that I’ve gotten to know through my visits and football camps in the country.”
He added, “Their support for me and the country’s instant connection to the Lions brand is inspiring, and I’m looking forward to our team getting to showcase Detroit football on an international scale.”
It’s not just players who are pumped for the trip to Germany. The Lions fanbase is responding well to the news, too.
Responding to the team’s post on social media, one fan commented, “Just waiting for the dates to drop, and Germany, here I come.” Another said, “If any country deserved to host us, it was 100% Germany. St Brown legacy game incoming.”
“Germany about to learn what Detroit Football is all about,” one more said. “Makes my husband from Detroit living in Germany very happy. Fingers crossed for getting tickets,” another added.

Over on X, one follower said, “Awesome that the St. Brown brothers go there regularly and now at least Amon Ra gets to play a game there.”

The last time the Detroit Lions played an international game was at London’s Wembley Stadium on November 1, 2015, against the Kansas City Chiefs. Before then, the Lions were the designated home team in a win over the Atlanta Falcons at Wembley Stadium on October 26, 2014, according to NFL research.
