The Denver Broncos’ offense has been a focal point of speculation this offseason, with head coach Sean Payton facing questions about strategy, personnel, and his hands-on approach after a middling 2025 campaign.
However, on Tuesday Payton made a stunning announcement that could reshape the team’s attack for years to come, signaling a potential evolution in how the Broncos operate on game days.

Broncos HC Sean Payton Drops Major Coaching Bombshell: Offensive Play-Calling Shift Sparks Debate Ahead of 2026 Season
In comments shared by NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero on X, Payton revealed he’s handing over offensive play-calling duties to new offensive coordinator Davis Webb. Payton praised the 31-year-old Webb as “extremely talented” and emphasized the move is designed to allow him to focus more on overseeing the entire team.
Payton explained:
“Davis Webb is extremely talented… He’ll call plays for Denver’s offense. I’ll still be involved with what we do offensively, but I’m making the decision for what’s best for the team.”
This marks a significant departure for Payton, known for his meticulous play-calling during his successful tenure with the New Orleans Saints (2006–2021), where he led Drew Brees to a Super Bowl XLIV victory. Since joining the Broncos in 2023, Payton has called plays himself, but the team’s inconsistent performance on offense prompted the change.

Webb, a former NFL quarterback (drafted by the New York Giants in 2017), transitioned to coaching after brief stints with the Giants, Jets, and Bills. He joined the Broncos in 2024 as quarterbacks coach under Payton and was promoted to OC this offseason. His work with rookie QB Bo Nix in 2025 showed promise, with Nix throwing for over 3,931 yards and 25 TDs despite growing pains.
Payton’s confidence in Webb suggests a belief in his creativity and ability to maximize the Broncos’ young talent, including Nix, WRs Courtland Sutton and Troy Franklin, and RB Audric Estimé.
Implications for the Broncos in 2026
The decision could free Payton to address broader team issues, like a defense that ranked bottom-10 in points allowed in 2025. It also aligns with Payton’s comments on evolving as a coach: “What’s best for the team” over personal preference.
Fan reactions on social media were mixed:
Optimists: “Finally! Let Payton HC and let Webb cook 🔥”
Skeptics: “Payton giving up play-calling? This better work or heads will roll.”
The Broncos enter the offseason with cap space and draft picks to build around Nix. If Webb’s play-calling clicks, Denver could return to playoff contention.
