“The Rooney Rule Is Strange” NFL GM Openly Criticizes Rule That Helps Black Coaches (Watch)

The NFL offseason is no stranger to heated debates, but a recent comment from one team’s top executive has ignited a firestorm of criticism, raising questions about whether league progress on inclusivity is stalling at a critical moment.

As teams gather at the scouting combine to build their futures, Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles found himself at the center of controversy with remarks that many are calling out of touch and potentially damaging to efforts aimed at opening doors for underrepresented coaches.

NFL Backlash Erupts as Bears GM Ryan Poles Questions Landmark Diversity Rule for Black Coaches

In a clip that quickly went viral on X (formerly Twitter), Poles expressed skepticism about the Rooney Rule—a policy established in 2003 to require teams to interview minority candidates for head coaching and senior football operations positions. Poles stated:

“I think it’s strange. At the end of the day you should want to develop your staff regardless of the color of their skin.”

Wow: Bears GM Ryan Poles is NOT a fan of the Rooney Rule.

The comment, shared by NFL insider Dov Kleiman, has drawn sharp backlash from fans, analysts, and advocates who argue it undermines a rule specifically designed to combat systemic barriers for Black and minority coaches in a league where diversity in leadership roles remains lagging. Critics point out that the Rooney Rule has been instrumental in increasing interview opportunities, even if hiring results have been mixed—only 9 of 32 head coaches in 2025 were minorities.

Poles, himself a Black executive who rose through the ranks from scout to GM, may have intended to emphasize merit-based development. But his wording has been slammed as dismissive of the rule’s purpose, with many questioning why an NFL GM would publicly criticize a mechanism meant to level the playing field for coaches of color. Social media reactions poured in, with one user writing, “An NFL GM calling the Rooney Rule ‘strange’? That’s tone-deaf at best.” Another added, “This sets back the conversation on Black coaches in the NFL—Poles should know better.”

What is the Rooney Rule?

The Rooney Rule, named after former Pittsburgh Steelers owner Dan Rooney, was created to address the lack of diversity in coaching hires. While it has led to more interviews for Black candidates, critics like Poles aren’t alone in questioning its effectiveness—some argue it has become performative. However, defenders say scrapping or downplaying it without a better alternative risks reversing hard-won gains.

As the Bears rebuild under Poles, this controversy adds unnecessary scrutiny. Will it impact team morale or free-agent pursuits? The NFL has not commented, but the backlash underscores the league’s ongoing struggle with equity.

Do you agree with Poles’ take, or is the Rooney Rule still essential for Black coaches? Share your thoughts below.
