Trent Williams and the 49ers appear to be at a critical crossroads as contract talks drag on with no clear resolution yet.
Williams, now 37, is entering the final season of his deal with a massive financial footprint. He’s scheduled to earn $32 million in base salary that isn’t guaranteed, and his current cap hit sits just under $39 million.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, both sides are still working through issues and haven’t landed on a solution.

If no new agreement is reached, the possibility of the 49ers moving on from Trent Williams can’t be ignored.
The team is on the hook for a $10 million option bonus due April 1, which complicates the timeline. Should San Francisco carry his contract into March, a trade could theoretically be explored, though that path is far from simple.
Not long ago, Trent Williams sounded confident he’d remain with the organization beyond 2025, even hinting at a return in 2026. That outlook now feels much less certain.
General manager John Lynch has acknowledged ongoing discussions with Williams’ agent, Vincent Taylor, emphasizing that the team wants to keep its longtime left tackle.
“I think we’re on the right track,” Lynch said on Tuesday at the NFL Scouting Combine. “Trent loves being a Niner. We love having Trent as a Niner. And it’s up to us to figure that out and to thread that needle. There are some unique circumstances. “I think we’re all on the same page and feel very positive about where it’s going.”

Lynch described the conversations as productive and expressed optimism about finding common ground, noting that Williams enjoys being in San Francisco, and the feeling is mutual. Still, Lynch admitted the situation comes with “unique circumstances” that make the negotiation tricky.
From the team’s perspective, lowering Trent Williams’ cap number is a priority, but leverage is limited. There’s no obvious replacement waiting in the wings.
While Austen Pleasants filled in admirably at times late in the season, his performance dipped when given a full start, including a rough outing in Week 18 against Seattle, where pass protection became an issue.
Despite dealing with a hamstring injury late in the regular season, Trent Williams returned for the playoffs and continued to perform at an elite level.
He earned second-team All-Pro honors and was selected to his 12th Pro Bowl, reinforcing just how valuable he remains—even as he approaches his 38th birthday in July.
With the league’s free agency tampering window opening March 9 and a key financial deadline looming in early April, the pressure is mounting. Whether Trent Williams stays in San Francisco or not may come down to how creatively both sides can navigate a deal that works for now—and the future.
