Former NFL cornerback Joe Haden, who played nine seasons with the Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers, has publicly expressed fear and urgency to leave Mexico after witnessing escalating cartel violence during a trip to Cabo San Lucas.
In a candid segment on his podcast Deebo & Joe (co-hosted with former Steelers teammate James Harrison), Haden admitted he should have taken Harrison’s earlier warnings about traveling to Mexico more seriously.

Former NFL Star Joe Haden “Spooked” in Mexico Amid Cartel Violence, Wants to Return to U.S. Immediately
Haden said:
“I should’ve listened to you. I should’ve listened to you, Deebo. Honestly, I’m a little spooked brother. I can’t even lie to you. It’s getting real tricky on this side of the world. I need to get back [my] feet planted on a U.S. territory.
I’m not even trying to be funny. I’m a little spooked. Because when you’re talking cartel, they’re going against police. They run up at airports and stuff.”
The 37-year-old, who retired from the NFL in 2021 after earning five Pro Bowl selections and a reputation as one of the league’s top shutdown corners, was in Cabo for leisure but has become increasingly concerned as violence involving cartels has reportedly intensified in tourist areas.
Harrison had previously cautioned Haden against the trip, citing safety risks. Haden’s comments reflect a growing unease among some American visitors amid recent headlines about cartel activity, including clashes with police and incidents near popular resorts.
Haden has not provided specific details about any personal threats or incidents he witnessed, but his public desire to return to U.S. soil quickly has resonated with fans and followers concerned about safety in certain parts of Mexico.

No official travel advisory changes have been issued by the U.S. State Department specifically tied to Cabo in the past week, but Americans are always urged to exercise increased caution in Mexico due to crime and kidnapping risks in some areas.
Joe Haden, a beloved figure in the NFL community, is now focused on getting home safely. Fans have flooded social media with messages of support and prayers for his safe return.
Stay safe, Joe. Thoughts and prayers for you and everyone affected by the situation in Mexico. Share your support below!
