Aston Villa reportedly could be forced to sell their prized asset Morgan Rogers.
Aston Villa could be forced to sell one of their prized assets in the summer transfer window, reports suggest.
According to journalist Ben Jacobs, the Premier League side may require a sale for financial reasons. Unai Emery’s side are third in the Premier League and are on track to return to the Champions League.
But they have had issues with the Premier League and UEFA’s financial rules in the past, selling the likes of Jacob Ramsay, Omari Kellyman and Tim Iroegbunam. Villa were fined million by UEFA last summer for breaching financial regulations and The Times suggests that the Birmingham-based side are facing another penalty.
If Villa need to raise funds, especially if they do miss out on Champions League qualification, a player sale could be required. And it is said that Morgan Rogers could be the player who Emery’s outfit have to sell. The attacking midfielder has fired 10 goals and five assists in 38 appearances this season and is on track to represent England at the World Cup.
Although Rogers signed a new contract only four months ago, Jacobs says that Villa could still have to reluctantly offload the 23-year-old. He has been linked with a move to Liverpool in the past.
Via GiveMeSport, Jacobs said: “Firstly, the contract extension was to reward Rogers and to protect his valuation, and secondly, Villa still may need a significant outgoing, even though they're on course for Champions League football this season.
"It may be that financially speaking, and to do a squad overhaul, a big outgoing is still necessary as far as Villa are concerned.
"It'll be really interesting to see whether the new contract has changed the goalposts and Villa hold more of the cards, or whether those suitors a year ago that may return in summer 2026 point back to their £80million plus valuation from last summer and still feel a deal is possible around those kind of terms."
After scoring a hat-trick in a 4-2 win over Celtic in the Champions League last year, former Villa midfielder Stiliyan Petrov tipped Rogers for big things. Petrov said: "He was a joy to watch. He was just outstanding, we saw everything from the young man. He looked like a mature player. He looked like he is going to be a star. He could have scored another two.”
