Mikel Arteta will be delighted that both Viktor Gyokeres and Eberechi Eze managed to score two goals during the match, and they are two players who have seen a lot of criticism this year.

Eze has struggled to find consistent form, outside of playing against Tottenham, and Gyokeres struggled to find regular scoring form during the first half of the season.

Carragher admits U-turn on Gyokeres

After the weekend’s win against Tottenham, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher admitted that Gyokeres has proven him wrong after his exceptional performance against Tottenham on Sunday afternoon.

He said on Sky Sports: “The thing I like about Viktor Gyokeres is his mentality. I don’t think he’s a world-class striker or an amazing striker for Arsenal for the next five or year. But I absolutely love his mentality.

“There’s no lack of confidence with him, he just gets the ball and bangs it in, it’s Alan Shearer-like, that sort of mentality. As Gary Neville said on commentary, I think that’s the best we’ve seen Gyokeres play in an Arsenal shirt, it was an absolutely fantastic finish.”

Arteta has ‘stuck by’ Gyokeres this season

Carragher also said that he has been impressed by the way that Arteta stuck with Gyokeres, despite his faltering form, earlier in the season. It has paid off, as he is now on a tally of 10 goals in the Premier League, putting him level with Hugo Ekitike and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

He added: “He could be [vital] and what I would say is here, is credit the manager. I felt they had to come away from Gyokeres and I thought at some stage it might cost them.

“But the manager has stuck by him week after week and the strength he showed in this game, it was very Alan Shearer-like.”
