Lewis Koumas scores again as Liverpool’s January transfer call vindicated

Lewis Koumas has now scored more goals in six games for Hull than he did in 25 for Birmingham, after the Liverpool striker switched loan clubs mid-season.

With Koumas struggling to hold down a starting role at Birmingham, Liverpool made the decision to terminate his loan in January and find an alternative.

That saw the Wales international join Hull for the remainder of the campaign, with the deal announced at the very end of the winter transfer window.

He made a dream start by scoring a dramatic winner with his first touch just four minutes into his debut – and Koumas has now added another to his goal tally.

This time it came in a 4-2 victory over Derby on Tuesday night, with the 20-year-old firing in brilliantly from the edge of the box to round off the scoring.

It was another immediate impact from Koumas, who had been subbed on for Joe Gelhardt just two minutes before finding the back of the net.

The win means Hull remain in the hunt for automatic promotion to the Premier League with 13 games to play – sitting fourth and only six points behind second-placed Middlesbrough who have played a game more.

With two goals in six appearances so far for Hull, Koumas has already beaten his record from 25 games at Birmingham in the first half of the season, having only scored once in that time.

The young striker has featured in all six games since completing his move to the MKM Stadium, coming off the bench five times in the Championship and starting against Chelsea in the FA Cup.

Liverpool’s decision to end Koumas’ time at Birmingham early has already been vindicated and the expectation is that he will work his way into Sergej Jakirovic’s starting lineup before long.

Koumas wasn’t the only loanee in action on Tuesday night with Luca Stephenson playing the full 90 minutes as Dundee United drew 0-0 with Aberdeen.

Meanwhile Luke Chambers made his seventh consecutive start for Charlton in their 1-1 draw with West Brom in the Championship, but was substituted after 56 minutes.

Summer arrival Ifeanyi Ndukwe started as Austria Vienna II lost 2-1 to Admira Wacker, having also been named on the bench for the first team’s 2-1 defeat to Alatch on Saturday.
