Broncos head coach relinquishes duties

The Denver Broncos were difficult to get a read on during the 2025 campaign. Denver sported one of the most impressive defenses in the league, but was characterized by inconsistent offensive play all season.

Things got really ugly for Denver in the playoffs. After starting quarterback Bo Nix went down with an injury in the divisional round, Denver was forced to turn to Jarrett Stidham in the AFC title game, and things turned particularly ugly.

Now, head coach Sean Payton is relinquishing a duty he’s held his entire career to get things turned around on that side of the ball, according to one of the most prominent insiders around the league.

“A notable change: Broncos HC Sean Payton said OC Davis Webb will be Denver’s play caller this season,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported.

“Great! I’m sure Payton will have input; he’s the HC. He wouldn’t turn it over unless he thought Webb could do a good job,” one fan wrote on Twitter.

“If it doesn’t work, Payton can take back the play-calling at any moment. It can take 15 seconds on the sideline. I wouldn’t read too much into this,” another fan added.

“It’s still going to by Sean’s scheme and playbook though. The real Q is how much freedom will DW have calling a specific play in a specific moment? This almost creates more questions than answers,” one fan added.

It’ll be interesting to see if Payton goes on to reclaim playcalling duties.
