Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka is reportedly being pursued by massive Premier League rivals Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur. Both clubs are keenly looking to enhance and upgrade their midfield come Summer. And Leon Goretzka could be a heavy upgrade if either club manages to capture his signature. We are approaching the back end of the ongoing season and both the North London clubs are going through contrasting seasons. Arsenal are in a title fight, whereas Tottenham are in a shocking relegation fight.
Leon Goretzka this season
Goretzka joined Bayern Munich from FC Schalke in July 2018 on a free transfer. He is currently playing his ninth season for the Bavarians and has become one of the most significant Bayern Munich players over the years. Now the German has confirmed that he will be leaving the German giants at the end of this season, and it has created widespread attention amongst the top European clubs.
Goretzka has not necessarily had one of his best seasons in the Bayern red this season. However, he has been efficiently doing his job in the midfield. The 31-year-old has also notably scored twice for Bayern this season. The German primarily operates in the defensive midfield area and strives through his physicality and presence. Other than being physically capable, Goretzka also possesses a very potent long-passing ability. His decision to leave and his communication with the club regarding the same also has been very professional. He would be a massive addition to any team in Europe at the moment.
Leon Goretzka and Arsenal
Arsenal are reportedly one of the top clubs who are monitoring Goretzka as a potential transfer target, come summer. The Gunners are currently in a tight title race against Manchester City in the Premier League. Despite their overall successful season across competitions so far this season, there has been several criticisms made on the way Arsenal have played football this season. Majority of the criticism has been about how they have lacked creativity and firepower in attack. Many have also criticized manager Mikel Arteta’s rigid, system-based football that hasn’t been attractive to watch.

Goretzka would obviously be a great addition to this Arsenal. The German is a kind of player who would add so much to any team he goes to. However, is he a priority signing? Arsenal’s midfield currently consists of Declan Rice, Norgaard, and Zubimendi. There has already been heavy backlash from Arsenal fans against Arteta for not using Norgaard too much. So Arsenal already have a midfielder who is struggling for gametime. Therefore signing Goretzka shouldn’t necessarily be priority.
Leon Goretzka and Tottenham
On the other hand, Tottenham badly need signings. It is not about positions and player profiles. The Hotspurs will take anything that comes their way. Any kind of signing that improves their overall quality will be crucial for the club. Because the North London club are currently going through an extremely poor phase. Being a “top 6” club, Tottenham fighting to stay in the Premier League and avoiding relegation is shocking and unacceptable. Despite their lack of silverware over the years, Tottenham are a club who have consistently finished in the top 4 in the Premier League. It is a sorry sight to witness a club of their size fight relegation.
Tottenham have a decent midfield group. With Bissouma, Sarr, and Palhinha. However, they have had to deal with constant injuries and lack of form this season. So Goretzka will completely transform the Tottenham midfield.
Conclusion
Tottenham Hotspur would love to capture the signature of Leon Goretzka as compared to rivals Arsenal. Simply because of how much their club is struggling in the league when compared to the Gunners. However, if both clubs intensely pursue the German, he will most likely choose the red side of North London.
