Liverpool capitalised on Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with Burnley by edging Nottingham Forest 1-0 thanks to a 97th-minute winner from Alexis Mac Allister. The late victory made it nine points from the last 12 as the Reds continue their push for Champions League qualification.
However, Manchester United’s 1-0 win at Everton left Liverpool three points adrift of the top four and within touching distance of Aston Villa in third, tightening the race further.
Next up for Liverpool FC is a home clash with West Ham United before a trip to Wolves, two fixtures that offer a chance to build momentum.
The Forest win also underlined the absence of Florian Wirtz, who withdrew from Arne Slot’s starting XI after suffering a back issue in the warm-up. Jeremie Frimpong, sidelined since the Champions League tie with Qarabag, could return against West Ham, pending a late fitness check.
Several players remain unavailable. Alexander Isak continues his recovery and will not feature, while Wataru Endo, Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni are ruled out for the long term.
Meanwhile, Jayden Danns has returned to training with the U21s after a difficult spell ahead of Sunday’s Premier League 2 visit of Tottenham Hotspur.
A stress fracture in his back disrupted a loan at Sunderland last season, and after a brief return in the Carabao Cup win over Southampton in September, a hamstring injury has kept him sidelined since.
“Jayden, if he would have been fit, would be in the squad,” Slot said. “Unfortunately, he isn’t and we don’t expect him back today or tomorrow as well. He’s been very unlucky in his career until now but he has a great mentality and is always fighting back after setbacks.
“He has had, unfortunately, quite a lot because this would have been a great moment for him with Alexander Isak being out, and with the quality he has, being with us and helped us in certain.
“Unfortunately for him and for us he has faced a lot of injuries, but he will fight back and come back and the world will get to know him, the moment he is fit again.”
Danns has racked up 10 appearances for Liverpool, scoring twice. James McConnell and new centre-back signing Mor Talla Ndiaye also took part in ball work as they continue their recoveries from respective fitness issues.
