Todd Monken: Shedeur Sanders 'elite playmaking' and Browns QB competition notes from NFL Combine

As the NFL world gets ready to over analyze prospect workout drills at the Scouting Combine from Indianapolis this week, [Cleveland Browns](https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/cleveland-browns) fans want to hear from their new head coach.

Todd Monken spoke Wednesday at a Combine presser as he embarks on a juggernaut of a journey to rebuild this lethargic offense. Ranked 31st in points-per-game last season, the new skipper noted in his introduction meeting with the media after getting hired, that his goal is to “score points any way possible.”

A huge part of any offensive success of course revolves around the starting quarterback. Unsurprisingly, many of the questions flying at the podium to Monken revolved around who would be under center.

Here are the most important questions asked, and Monken’s answers:

_Q- What has your evaluation of Shedeur Sanders been?_

**Monken**\- “Elite playmaking ability. We saw it on tape, saw it last year, saw it college. Sure there’s a way to go, but what rookie doesn’t. I’m excited about Shedeur and all our quarterbacks”

_Q- How do you intend on distributing reps for quarterbacks in training camp?_

**Monken**\- “You would hope that by training camp the majority of reps go to your starter…but we won’t know how that plays out until we get there.”

_Q- Will it be an open competition for starting quarterback?_

**Monken**\- “Sure. I think it’s an open competition. I don’t know why it wouldn’t be. I don’t think there’s enough on film one way or the other to feel that we know who our starter is.”

_Q- On state of Deshaun Watson_

**Monken**\- “Any time you have a player who at one time played at an elite level, you give them the benefit of the doubt to see if they can get that back. So he’ll get a chance. I don’t decide who plays, the players decide who plays…I’m excited to work with him, and excited to work with all our players.”

_Q- Does he think the starting QB could come from outside the organization?_

**Monken**\- “The answer could be externally, I don’t know, we’ll do our due diligence and have to see.”

_Q- What is the “it factor” when you’re looking at quarterbacks coming out of the draft?_

**Monken**\- “Have to vet people that have been around them for an extended period of time. Having a 20-minute interview (at the Combine) with a player isn’t nearly enough. How are they in a two-minute drill? Around teammates? Those answers are all important.”

_Q- Have you had a chance to study Ty Simpson, and what your thoughts are on him coming out in the draft?_

**Monken**\- I like Ty a lot. Really good football player. His father was a Southern Miss alum, where I was head coach, so got to know him a little bit.

The head coach also was asked about what he’s looking for in offensive linemen since currently the Browns don’t have one starter from 2025 signed. “Most of all I’m looking for someone who’s physically tough and consistent. Everything else can be coached up if they are willing.”

One more piece of housekeeping is that assistant defensive line is the last coaching position that Monken has to fill out on his staff.

The new HC presented himself in a poised, confident manner. Now it’ll be up to GM Andrew Berry to give Monken the ingredients to cook up an explosive offense.
