Jets linked to Eagles $1.9 million backup QB as Justin Fields replacement

The New York Jets have a very clear need at quarterback this offseason. Justin Fields didn't work out, and the Jets now need to land a new starter.

While the NFL Draft doesn't have any good options, the Jets could turn to the trade market for a few interesting starters. One of which comes from the Philadelphia Eagles.

ESPN's Ben Solak identified Tanner McKee, the Eagles' backup QB on a $1.9 million contract, as a player who's worth trading for. And with ESPN linking McKee and the Jets as a potential fit, a trade this offseason could work.

Jets linked to Eagles' Tanner McKee for potential trade

"McKee looks like a young quarterback worthy of development in his preseason and late-season starts," Solak writes.

The 25-year-old quarterback, according to ESPN, has a 20% "Predicted chance of getting traded" this offseason. McKee has four "Potential team fits" according to ESPN, which include the Miami Dolphins, Jets, Minnesota Vikings, and Kansas City Chiefs.

Of the four possible landing spots, the Dolphins and Jets are likely the best, since those teams are better suited to take a chance on the Eagles quarterback as an instant starter.

While McKee hasn't had much of a chance to play in the NFL in his three seasons with the Eagles, when he has suited up, he's looked solid.

Across two starts and six total games, the last two seasons, McKee has put up a 61.4% completion rate with 597 passing yards, five touchdowns, and one interception.

McKee is a fascinating trade option for the Jets, as he's not had much experience in the NFL, but he's shown enough promise that he could be a solid starter.

The Jets are one of the fits for McKee if the Eagles trade their 2023 draft pick, and since he only has one year left on his current deal, the Jets wouldn't have to part with much to get him. He's a cheap rental option that is worth taking a flier on.
