ESPN called head coach Brian Schottenheimer and Dallas Cowboys a potential trade fit for San Francisco 49ers cornerback Renardo Green.

The Dallas Cowboys have been one of the most active teams on the NFL trade market over the past couple years. ESPN sees the Cowboys going shopping again this offseason, perhaps for San Francisco 49ers cornerback Renardo Green.

ESPN’s Dan Graziano and Ben Solak identified the Cowboys as a potential trade fit for Green. The NFL insiders named Green a trade possibility because he’s potentially on the outs in San Francisco.

“He is still only 25 and would have value in a trade. The Niners have a new defensive coordinator in Raheem Morris, and Green might not be a scheme fit,” Graziano wrote. “The 2024 second-round pick has just one interception in two NFL seasons, and he seemed to fall out of favor a bit with the coaching staff at times last season.”

Graziano and Solak predicted an 80% chance of the 49ers trading Green this offseason. In addition to the Cowboys, the insiders called the Atlanta Falcons and Philadelphia Eagles potential fits.

“Green isn’t a particularly big outside corner, but he makes up for it with quickness and aggressiveness,” Solak wrote. “Double-digit pass breakups in each of his first two seasons is a testament to that.

“The coaching staff got frustrated with mental lapses and unnecessary aggressiveness last season, and teams will call accordingly to see if Green has run out of time in San Francisco.”

Could Cowboys Acquire Renardo Green From 49ers?

In 2025, the Cowboys finished 30th in yards allowed and last in points yielded. Dallas was also near the bottom of the league in pass defense, passing touchdowns allowed and interceptions.

Whether via trade, free agency or the draft, Dallas needs to improve defensive. Other than perhaps edge rusher, the secondary might need the most upgrades.

Therefore, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Dallas interested in Green if he’s available. Green is still only 25 years old, has starter experience and is cheap. He has two years remaining on his rookie deal and will cost just $3.04 million for those two seasons.

Due to those factors, Green might cost a little more on the trade market. But if the 49ers are interested in replacing him, then maybe they will have incentive to move on for a lower draft pick.

In 2025, Green posted 60 combined tackles and 10 pass defenses in 14 starts. He started every game in which he played.

As a rookie during 2024, he registered 61 combined tackles with 13 pass defenses and an interception in 17 contests. He started seven of those games.

The 49ers drafted Green at No. 64 overall in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft.

Cowboys CB Depth Entering 2026 NFL Offseason

DaRon Bland will remain as one of the Cowboys starting cornerbacks. Who will start opposite him, though, remains to be seen.

On December 30, the Cowboys released Trevon Diggs. That opens the door to fellow cornerbacks Kaiir Elam and Shavon Revel likely starting opposite Bland.

However, Elam and Revel were both underwhelming with their play in 2025. Revel was particularly disappointing in his return from a torn ACL he suffered in college.

Perhaps Revel will improve another year removed from the ACL injury. Because of the ailment, he didn’t get to participate in offseason workouts and the preseason as a rookie.

Whether the Cowboys pursue a cornerback such as Green could be a very strong indication of how the organization feels about Revel going forward.

Veteran cornerbacks C.J. Goodwin and Corey Ballentine will be unrestricted free agents for Dallas. But neither played much of a role on defense during 2025.
