Liverpool need to add a different element to their midfield next season, and Ajax prodigy Sean Steur is the latest name linked.
Steur is an 18-year-old defensive midfielder being eyed by some of the Premier League’s top sides, with Liverpool one of those to send scouts to watch the young talent in recent weeks.
A two-footed midfielder, Steur plays like a much more experienced player than his age suggests.
Who was the better Liverpool goalkeeper – prime Alisson or prime Pepe Reina?
Liverpool’s midfield unit has been lacking that deep-lying playmaker who can sit in front of the back four and run the show. It’s a role he could grow into.
Why Liverpool are entering the race for Sean Steur
Liverpool have been linked with Kees Smit, another Dutch midfielder for AZ Alkmaar. He’s on the radar of Europe’s elite as well, but is a more attacking profile of midfielder than Steur.
Maybe that’s why Liverpool’s gaze has shifted to the Ajax star. A TEAMtalk report claims Liverpool have ‘exploded into the race’, and are joined by Manchester United and Arsenal in eyeing a summer move.
Sources close to Ajax say Steur is viewed as ‘the best midfield prospect since Frenkie De Jong’ — a comparison that should excite Liverpool fans.

He is very inexperienced, but when he has played for the Dutch giants, he has looked at home at the base of the midfield. In limited minutes, he is putting up some of the best numbers in the Eredivisie in long passing, duels won and ball retention.
That being said, he has played further forward as well. He could be a hybrid kind of midfielder like Ryan Gravenberch.
In a season below Ajax’s usual standards, the teenager has been a bright spark.
Steur doesn’t address the Liverpool midfield’s most urgent need
It’s never unwelcome news to hear of Liverpool going after the best prospects in Europe, but it would very much fall under business on the side next summer.
Liverpool need an elite holding midfielder who can come into Arne Slot’s first-team plans straight away. That should be priority number one.

A move for Steur is intriguing. The Ajax academy is usually a reliable source of talent.
But it would only be acceptable as a move for the future, with a win-now midfield signing taking precedence.
