According toNFL insider Jordan Schultz, theAtlanta Falcons have informed wide receiver and former Pro Bowl special teamerKhaDarel Hodge that he’ll be released, ending his four year run in Atlanta.

Hodge, now 31 years old, made the Pro Bowl in 2024 for his work on special teams. Offensively the numbers were modest (37 catches for 596 yards and two touchdowns in four seasons) but that doesn’t really capture what he meant to the team. He filled roles, did the dirty work, and was trusted in big moments.

None was bigger than that overtime game against theTampa Bay Buccaneers in 2024, which Atlanta fans remember well. With the game tied at 30,Drake London out, and the season hanging in the balance, Hodge streaks downfield and catches the 45 yard walk off touchdown… It was electric.

Last season he played just 10 percent of the offensive snaps as a third and often fourth receiver. But on special teams, he was still a constant. Hodge brought energy every week and that reliability made him a favorite in the locker room and with fans.

Cap implications

This move is about money, too.

Cutting KhaDarel Hodge saves roughly $2.64 million against the cap, with about $625,000 in dead money. The Atlanta Falcons were sitting around $11 million in space… This pushes them past $13 million as free agency approaches.

The Falcons may even reshape their entire wide receiver room this offseason as fellow veteran WRDarnell Mooney has also been mentioned as a potential cap casualty, signaling that broader changes could be coming at the position.

It also hints at a wider reset at wide receiver. Darnell Mooney has been floated as another possible cap casualty, and it wouldn’t be surprising if Atlanta reshapes the room entirely. But this feels bigger than just cap math.

The Falcons are in a new era, led by president of football operations Matt Ryan, general manager Ian Cunningham, and head coach Kevin Stefanski. After missing the playoffs every season since 2017, the message is clear… Small adjustments are not enough.

When a franchise decides to start over, sentiment doesn’t carry much weight. Even respected veterans and special teams standouts can become part of the turnover.

Releasing Hodge fits that theme. The move isn’t flashy, but it reflects a team prioritizing cap efficiency and roster recalibration over continuity.

What’s next for Hodge?

KhaDarel Hodge should draw legitimate interest once free agency opens pretty easily.

Special teams aces with proven production and Pro Bowl credentials rarely struggle to find work. Teams looking to stabilize their coverage units or add veteran depth at wide receiver will likely view Hodge as a low risk, high character addition.

While his time in Atlanta ends somewhat abruptly, his reputation around the league remains strong.

For the Atlanta Falcons, however, the message is clear… A new era has arrived, and no roster spot is guaranteed as they attempt to reset both their salary cap and their competitive trajectory in 2026.
