The Minnesota Vikings front office delivered a stunning public gut-punch to young quarterback J.J. McCarthy during the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, with executive vice president of football operations (and interim GM) Rob Brzezinski offering zero vote of confidence and openly questioning whether McCarthy can deliver the “baseline” play the team needs to compete.

NFL News: Vikings VP Rob Brzezinski Trashes QB J.J. McCarthy in Damning Combine Comments – “We Need Baseline Play”
In remarks that have sent shockwaves through the league, Brzezinski told reporters (via Erich Richter of the New York Post):
“What we do know is we need a level of baseline quarterback play for us to be effective. A lot of this has been J.J. in unfortunate situations with some of the injuries and things that he’s dealt with, but we’re going to explore every opportunity, and I don’t think there’s anything specifically we’re looking for.
We can’t manufacture anything that’s not there. So, No. 1, what are the options? Is it reciprocal? Is it financially doable? All those things. There’s just a lot of factors that go into it…I don’t think we’re ruling anything out.”
The comments come after a disastrous 2025 rookie season for McCarthy, who started 10 games, missed seven due to injury, and posted a dismal stat line: 11 touchdowns against 12 interceptions and a 72.6 passer rating — one of the lowest marks for any starting quarterback in recent memory.

The Vikings chose to let Sam Darnold walk in free agency after he went 14-3 as a starter in 2024 and helped lead Seattle to a Super Bowl 60 title.
Instead of building around Darnold’s proven production, Minnesota bet on McCarthy — only to watch him struggle with accuracy, decision-making, and availability.
Brzezinski’s refusal to offer even mild public support (“we can’t manufacture anything that’s not there”) essentially puts the 2024 first-round pick on the hottest of seats entering Year 2.
Vikings Already Linked to Kirk Cousins Reunion
Multiple reports indicate Minnesota is aggressively targeting Kirk Cousins in free agency after the Atlanta Falcons announced they would release the four-time Pro Bowler. Cousins, who previously played under Vikings brass, would represent a proven, veteran bridge option if the team loses faith in McCarthy’s ability to develop quickly.
The Vikings’ willingness to openly discuss “every opportunity” and explore trade/free-agent quarterbacks has fueled speculation that McCarthy could be relegated to backup duty — or potentially traded — before he ever gets a full, healthy season as the starter.
NFL fans and analysts have reacted with shock to the rare public lack of support from a team executive for a young quarterback:
“That’s about as close to throwing your rookie QB under the bus as you can get without actually saying the words.”
“If your interim GM won’t even pretend to back the kid, he’s probably done in Minnesota.”
With the league year beginning March 11, 2026, the Vikings’ quarterback situation has become one of the most dramatic storylines of the offseason.
