On January 28, Todd Monken became the 19th head coach Browns’ history. Monken arrives in Cleveland, tasked with a mission: fix the quarterback issues and, probably, develop Shedeur Sanders into a franchise QB. Just a year ago, Sanders endured a tragic slide on draft day when he fell all the way to the 144th pick in the fifth round before Cleveland finally made the call.

The early verdict on Sanders is as polarizing as the man himself. His rookie statistics, a 56.6% completion rate and 10 interceptions, seem to validate the anonymous coach who dismissed him for taking “unnecessary sacks” and never playing “on time”. However, numbers rarely capture the “knack” that Monken identified during his first sessions evaluating the young quarterback’s pocket presence.
“Shedeur surprised me a little bit… He’s got a knack,” Monken told reporters on Wednesday. “He’s got a feel. He has a real sense in the pocket…”

In seven starts, Sanders managed to navigate around a compromised offensive line to throw for 1,400 yards and 7 touchdowns. Monken, who has mentored MVPs like Lamar Jackson, was quick to praise Sanders’ inherent feel for the pocket.

No Guarantee Of Job Security For Shedeur Sanders in Todd Monken Era
While Sanders earned a Pro Bowl nod, there’s no guarantee of job security in a QB room as crowded and complex as Cleveland’s. Sanders will face a tough and straightforward coaching regime and a wide-open competition for the 2026 starting job. He will face competition from Deshaun Watson, who’s still rehabbing from back-to-back Achilles tears, and fellow 2025 draftee Dillon Gabriel.
