The Buffalo Bills need a solid quarterback to back up Josh Allen going into the 2026-27 season, and that's important.

Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills are making waves in the offseason, especially following th team’s high-profile split with head coach Sean McDermott in January. The Bills replaced him with offensive coordinator Joe Brady, and now, they’re reshaping the team’s lineup, which includes the quarterback position.

Now, Allen’s backup quarterback position is coming under scrutiny. The Buffalo Bills, of course, want Allen healthy for the entire season, but if he goes down, having the right backup quarterback will be very important.

Allen is the focal point of this team, and that’s why he was part of head coach interviews. Speaking on FS1’s “First Things First” show on February 3, he talked about what it was like to be part of the hiring process.

“It was a fun time. It was a unique perspective,” Allen said of the experience. “A little awkward at times, because I’m sitting there and getting paid to be the quarterback, right?

He added, “But I think having that perspective of what the pulse of the locker room is, being able to ask questions and help Mr. [Terry] Pegula, the Pegula family, some of the scouts and, ultimately, [Bills general manager] Brandon Beane, those are the guys who make the decisions, having those questions being asked, they may not have thought of those from the player perspective. It was interesting.”

Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills Needs a Solid Backup Quarterback for 2026-27

So, who should back Allen up? In a feature for the Buffalo Lowdown on Wednesday, February 25, Ryan Womeldorf has a favorite: Mitchell Trubisky.

“The one in-house commodity to consider is veteran quarterback Mitchell Trubisky,” he states in the feature. “After a two-year detour in Pittsburgh, Trubisky returned to the Bills for 2024 and 2025. He is fine as a backup quarterback, probably better than most of the other backups, but he will never live up to his lofty draft status.”

Womeldorf mentions that the Bills may not be able to shelve out $3 million or more , but if the player is “open to taking a pay cut under his $2 million 2024 base salary, then by all means, bring him back into the fold.” He adds, “Having someone familiar with Brady’s offense who is good in the room can’t be quantified.”

In the end, Womeldorf says that if he’s “willing to take the pay cut, Trubisky would be ideal for his camaraderie with Allen and familiarity with Brady’s system. If he is unwilling to take that pay cut, drafting someone late and letting them learn from a future Hall of Famer is far from the worst situation.”

Josh Allen Raves About Buffalo Bills Head Coach Joe Brady

Back to the talk about the team’s new head coach, Allen has said glowing things about Brady.

“He’s a real human that guys can get behind and understand and play for,” Allen told reporters at Brady’s introductory press conference. “I thought in his interview, the vision that he had for this team. … He’s going to continue to keep working hard and trying to find ways for our team now to be put in successful positions”
