Arsenal beat Tottenham 4-1 on Sunday in what was a dominant display. When it comes to Spurs this season, Eberechi Eze has been a real thorn in their side, as he scored a hat-trick in the first meeting earlier in the season.
On Sunday, Eze scored two more goals against Spurs, taking his tally for the season up to five, which is impressive despite his recent struggles for form. Eze started ahead of captain Martin Odegaard on Sunday sparking suggestions that Odegaard could leave.
Arsenal told Odegaard “might be leaving”
Martin Odegaard joined Arsenal in 2021 for a fee of just £31m. He is now estimated to be worth around £65m, and has been one of the best midfielders in the Premier League over the past few seasons.
However, because of the emergence of Eze, who joined in the summer, the Gunners have been told by former Liverpool star Steve Nicol that Odegaard could leave in the summer.
Nicol said on ESPN: “Odegaard might be leaving Arsenal. If you’re Odegaard, the club captain and 18 months ago you were the guy. All of a sudden – and I know he’s had some injuries – but there’s question marks over whether he actually starts because of Eze.
“And maybe because of the way he’s been playing, someone else might get ahead of him as well. So if you’re Martin Odegaard, do you stick around? I don’t think you do.”
Odegaard has made 27 appearances for Arsenal in all competitions this season, scoring one goal, and providing seven assists. In comparison, Eze has managed to score seven goals, and provided six assists in 37 appearances this season, showing himself to be more of a difference-maker, and less injury prone.
Arteta is a big fan of Odegaard though, as he made him club captain. He was quoted on Odegaard’s captaincy by the Standard, he said: “He has this capacity to do that with his talent, taking the ball in moments where others probably refuse to, but as well with his attitude, his rhythm and the way he presses and puts people under pressure.”
