📰 News we're reading
1. Apple to expand Houston facility, bringing Mac mini production to U.S. for the first time (debatepolitics.com) — Apple is doubling the size of its Houston-area campus near Jersey Village and will start manufacturing Mac mini computers there later this year, creating thousands of local jobs. The facility already produces AI servers and will add a new advanced manufacturing center to train students, suppliers, and U.S. businesses, reinforcing Houston’s growing role as a hub for high-tech manufacturing and investment.
2. Houston homeowner's yearlong water leak finally repaired after KHOU 11 steps in (khou.com) — A Houston homeowner finally saw a yearlong backyard flood fixed after KHOU 11 helped get a broken pipe near her property repaired. City officials traced the leak to a nearby business, whose landlord quickly authorized repairs and pledged to address any remaining damage to her yard. The once-soggy Houston backyard has now dried out, bringing long-awaited relief.
3. Houston Texans plan massive 83-acre ‘Toro District' development in northwest Harris County (click2houston.com) — Northwest Harris County residents could soon see big changes as the Houston Texans’ planned 83-acre Toro District brings new headquarters, bridges, roads, drainage upgrades, parks, and a county services hub to the Bridgeland–Cypress area. Funded through a Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone, the project aims to keep new tax revenue local for infrastructure. Construction will roll out over three years, with leaders stressing growth management and localized tax impacts.
4. Houston city and state leaders push back on HISD's plan to close 12 schools, citing rushed timeline (khou.com) — Houston leaders are pushing back on a fast-moving plan to close 12 Houston ISD schools, questioning whether the process is transparent and fair to Black and Brown neighborhoods. State lawmakers and City Council members want the HISD board to delay Thursday’s vote, demand an equity analysis, and insist on more community input before any campuses are shut down.
5. Suspected drug deal turns deadly in west Houston shooting, police say (khou.com) — Police are investigating a deadly shooting at an apartment complex on Country Place Drive in west Houston that left one man dead and another wounded. Investigators say narcotics found beside the victim suggest a drug deal gone wrong, and they now believe the injured man—initially found at a clinic—was involved in the incident. No arrests have been announced as detectives continue gathering evidence.
