Andy Robertson has “no chance of a new contract” – ‘certain’ to leave Liverpool

Andy Robertson has “no chance of a new contract” and it is “a certainty that he will go” at the end of the season, in the view of Liverpool journalist David Lynch.

Robertson will enter the final four months of his contract on Sunday and there is a growing sense of certainty that the vice-captain will leave in the summer.

It will mark the end of nine years at Liverpool during which he cemented himself as arguably the best-ever left-back in Premier League history and one of the club’s all-time great players.

And while talks have taken place over an extension, the development of a possible mid-season move to Tottenham has signalled Robertson’s intention to move on.

That is the view of Liverpool journalist Lynch, who told Anfield Index: “For me, that’s a certainty that he will go now.

“The idea that he entertained the Tottenham interest and was willing to go in January, there’s no chance of a new contract now and he will depart.”

Why Liverpool stand to lose their leadership group in 2026

With question marks over the futures of Alisson and Mo Salah – both of whom have just over a year left on their deals provided the club take up a 12-month option for the goalkeeper – Liverpool could see their leadership group dismantled this summer.

If Robertson, Alisson and Salah were all to leave, which of course is not guaranteed, it would leave only Virgil van Dijk from the established core of leaders in the squad.

“They’ve all been there a very long time, they’ve all set standards for a very long time,” Lynch continued.

“But equally, they stepped up into it. They joined the club at one point, became leaders, so the job will be for others to do that in their place.”

Who could take over as next Liverpool vice-captain?

Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai are two such characters, with the latter already backed as future captain, while Ibrahima Konate has been credited as a big influence in the dressing room.

Curtis Jones has spoken of his desire to captain the club but, like Konate, he faces an uncertain future as he enters a pivotal juncture in talks over a new contract.

At the very least, Arne Slot will face a decision over his next vice-captain if and when Robertson departs – which would mean another new deputy for Van Dijk after the Scot took over from Trent Alexander-Arnold last summer.
