Former Liverpool star Jamie Carragher was subjected to complaints about Anfield's atmosphere, but didn't argue the point. Instead, he just laughed and allowed a disgruntled fan to continue her attack on Premier League grounds in a wider sense.

Opposition players and managers have spoken highly of the atmosphere at the Reds' famous ground. However, when it comes to visiting fans, questions have been raised about the home support, with one even comparing Premier League grounds unfavourably to those in the Championship, due to an influx of day-trippers or tourists for league games.

Speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, a Nottingham Forest fan suggested the atmosphere and the banter between fans was better in the second tier. She pre-emptively apologised to Carragher before attacking how things are at Anfield - as well as some Premier League grounds - but the pundit just let her speak rather than butting in with a counter-argument.

"You go to Anfield, I'm sorry, it's dry. You can hear things through the tannoy," she said. "All we hear when we go to Chelsea is 'Chelsea'... 'Arsenal'... Sing a song!

"And it's because it's just tourists. And is just tourists. We are the product; we pay the wages at the end of the day.

"I know, literally, it's not us, but why do broadcasters want to broadcast football? Because there are fans. Without fans, there is no football."

At its best, the Anfield atmosphere is a sight to behold, with the crowd almost willing the ball into the opposition net. Some fans have expressed reservations more recently, though, with a variety of theories at play.

While matchgoers might view Anfield one way, there has also been a clear response from rival players and managers who have been forced to contend with the Reds at their best. A comprehensive 5-1 victory over Tottenham last April confirmed Liverpool's status as league champions, and opposition manager Ange Postecoglou felt the atmosphere was a big factor.

"Even apart from the goal, I thought just in general we had decent territory, but once they got in front with the atmosphere inside the stadium, fair to say it was going to be difficult for us to claw them back, and that's how it proved," the Australian said.

Qarabag boss Gurban Gurbanov was of a similar opinion after a trip to Anfield in the Champions League. His team lost 6-0 in their final league phase match, with the three points ensuring Liverpool went straight through to the round of 16 without a play-off.

"The Liverpool stadium affected our players, but if we play here again, we will be better. After the game, we had a talk, and the players admitted they can play better," Gurbanov said. "The players weren't happy because they understood they didn't play well enough.

"We are sorry that we lost the game. I congratulate Liverpool. If you look at the eight games we have had, we have taken a lot of risks, and we did that again here. But we could have played better."
