Man Utd and Manchester City could do battle in the summer transfer window as they both eye the same player.

Manchester United and Man City could battle for the same target in the summer transfer window as they both look to refresh their midfield at the end of the season.

United have made a midfield refresh their priority this year, with two additions expected in the position. City are also in the market for a central midfielder, with both clubs keen to sign a player who is already proven in the Premier League.

Neither side have finalised their list of targets for the summer yet, with several names under consideration. United and City both hold an interest in Nottingham Forest star Elliot Anderson and Newcastle ace Sandro Tonali, while fellow midfielders Carlos Baleba, Alex Scott and Adam Wharton could also be on the radar for the respective clubs. It seems like City might have an advantage to sign one of those players this summer, though.

City 'lead the race' to sign Anderson

Manchester City reportedly lead the race to sign Nottingham Forest star Elliot Anderson at the end of the season. The 23-year-old has been a key performer at the City Ground across the last two seasons and is expected to be at the centre of a fierce transfer battle this summer.

It is understood Anderson could cost as much as £100 million if he plays a key role for England at the World Cup, though his price tag could be lower if Forest are relegated from the Premier League. Forest sit just two points above the relegation zone with 11 matches remaining of the league campaign.

United view Anderson as a 'dream' midfield addition this summer, though any potential move will hinge on whether they manage to qualify for the Champions League. A report from Flash Score claims City are the team leading the race to sign the England international at the end of the season and that progress has already been made towards a deal. They also cite City 'sources' who believe they are in the driving seat to win the race for Anderson and that they are indeed his first-choice destination.

Anderson addresses transfer rumours

Elliot Anderson insists his sole focus is on Nottingham Forest amid the continued speculation over his future at the club. The midfielder has been linked with a move to Liverpool, as well as both Manchester United and Man City, but does not plan to decide on his future until the end of the season.

"I'm just focusing on my football at the moment and performing and trying to give everything for Nottingham Forest, really," Anderson told reporters ahead of Forest's Europa League play-off second leg with Fenerbahce.

"So that's all that's on my mind. It's been a big two years. I think I've done pretty well, to be honest, in the time I've been here, on and off the pitch. I think I've matured as a person as well. Thanks to the club, really, for giving me that platform, going out there and playing and letting me do my stuff."
