Chelsea Warned They Could Risk Champions League Expulsion If They Don’t Sell“Some Superstars”

Chelsea face being “kicked out of the Champions League” if they breach UEFA Financial Fair Play rules again, according to expert Adam Williams.

Speaking to The Chelsea Chronicle (via Chelsea.news), Williams said that the Blues avoided issues with the Premier League after selling the women’s team, but UEFA won’t include that sale in their assessment. A past breach means they could be in danger of severe punishment if they can’t balance the books, and it means selling high-profile players is very much on the agenda:

“The real problem is UEFA’s rules, which don’t recognise the artificial profit from the women’s team sale. Chelsea have already breached those rules and are under the terms of settlement, which, broadly speaking, means they have to break even financially over the next three years.”

“Given that they have posted annual operating losses – that’s the loss before profit on player sales – of £200m since the takeover, that’s going to require a major recalibration to their strategy.”

“If they breach the terms of that settlement, they can get hit with a further cash fine and be kicked out of the Champions League. The solution is players’ sales – we’re going to see a lot more sales. And I’d predict that it’s not just going to be peripheral squad players; there will be some superstars leaving too.”

Who could Chelsea sell?

The Blues have a whole host of valuable stars in their first-team squad. According to Transfermarkt, twelve of them are worth in excess of €40m.

Of course, you wouldn’t expect the likes of Cole Palmer, Moises Caicedo or Reece James to be offloaded, but it may raise doubts over the futures of Pedro Neto, Alejandro Garnacho and even Marc Cucurella, who will have two years left on his contract this summer.

Expect another busy summer at Stamford Bridge

The spectre of a possible UEFA punishment means we could see plenty of incomings and outgoings again at the end of the season.

While the balance in past transfer windows has been weighted in favour of signings, rather than sales, fans may have to be prepared for some high-profile departures.
