Real Madrid’s persistent interest in Alexis Mac Allister has become an uncomfortable cloud sitting over Anfield over the last two seasons.

The Spanish giants first began eyeing the Argentine World Cup winner in mid-2024, viewing him as the ideal successor to midfield legends Toni Kroos and Luka Modric.

The flirtation intensified throughout 2024 and 2025, with multiple Spanish outlets reporting Madrid’s admiration for the 27-year-old.

Reports emerged that Los Blancos made contact with Liverpool to gauge transfer possibilities, though no formal offers materialized initially. Mac Allister’s father, Carlos, acknowledged the speculation in interviews, noting it was “always nice” when his son was linked with “the biggest clubs in the world,” though he stressed Alexis remained committed to Liverpool.

However, a slightly concerning update from the Liverpool Echo‘s Ian Doyle suggests that this summer may be an important one in terms of keeping the Reds No.10.

Answering a question in a fan Q&A, the Merseyside reporter has a “hunch” that Mac Allister could leave for the Bernabeu at the end of the term:

“I’ve long had a hunch that Mac Allister will leave at the end of the season, with Real Madrid his next destination,” he wrote.

“However, the player’s form this campaign has been less than anyone would have wanted and has seen such talk largely dissipate.”

“But this is a World Cup year. And if Mac Allister has a good one with Argentina, there’s every chance Real will be sniffing around him and, with two years left on his contract, if a new deal isn’t agreed then Liverpool would have a decision to make should a big-money offer come in.”

“I would rather Mac Allister didn’t leave, though. At his best he is a fantastic player and in the long-term could link very well with Florian Wirtz. He’d be a difficult one to replace.”

The Anfield club has opened preliminary talks with the Argentinian regarding a new deal, but those talks have not not been in-depth according to reliable reports.
