Could the Cowboys end up signing Jamel Dean?

The 2025 season was undoubtedly a disappointing one for the Dallas Cowboys. After entering the season with the hope of bouncing back from their poor 2024 season, the Cowboys once again struggled during the 2025 campaign. The Cowboys finished the season with an underwhelming 7-9-1 record and missed the playoffs for the second year in a row.

Now, after a rough 2025 season, the Cowboys are expected to be active this offseason. It is clear that they have multiple roster needs that they must address if they hope to have better results during the 2026 season. Due to this, they will be a team to keep a close eye on this offseason.

One area that the Cowboys could look to boost their roster this offseason is through free agency. This year’s free agency class could have several solid players, so the Cowboys should have plenty of options to consider.

One of the Cowboys’ top roster needs at this juncture is an impactful cornerback. Because of this, they are now being linked to a very interesting free agent who would certainly have the potential to improve their roster.

Jamel Dean Named “Perfect” Free Agent Target for the Cowboys

In a recent article for Bleacher Report, Alex Ballentine discussed one free agent target for each NFL team that would be a “perfect” addition to their roster. When it came to the Cowboys, Ballentine argued that cornerback Jamel Dean is the player that Dallas should be making a big push for this offseason.

“No one gave up more passing yards than the Dallas Cowboys this season. They already released Trevon Diggs and they should be on the lookout for all avenues to improve their cornerback room this offseason. Jamel Dean’s market will have to take into account that he’s already 29 years old, but Dallas needs production and leadership. Dean can provide both and stabilize one of the league’s most unstable position groups from last season,” Ballentine wrote.

When looking at the Cowboys’ current roster, there is no question that Dean would have the potential to be a strong addition to their group. He would certainly give them a notable upgrade at the cornerback position, and that is a real need for the Cowboys if they hope to be a bigger threat during the 2026 season.

Dean’s playoff experience also adds to his appeal. This is because the 2019 third-round pick has a Super Bowl ring on his resume, as he was a part of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers‘ championship-winning team back in 2020.

Cowboys Could Have Competition for Dean If They Target Him

While there is no question that Dean looks like he could be a strong fit on the Cowboys’ roster, the same could be said for multiple teams around the league. Because of this, it would not be surprising in the slightest if he has multiple suitors this offseason if he hits the market. With this, the Cowboys could have plenty of competition to land him.

Yet, with the Cowboys in need of another cornerback, they should consider making a real push for Dean this offseason. It will be interesting to see if they do just that from here.
