'Grow market value': Juan Mata gives his honest verdict on Chelsea's transfer policy

Chelsea’s transfer policy continues to come under the microscope with billions spent, and yet, little improvement on the pitch. Juan Mata has now had his say on BlueCo’s approach.

It is believed that since Todd Boehly and Clearlake arrived at Stamford Bridge, the best part of £3billion has been spent on the club, infrastructure and mostly, players by those upstairs at Chelsea currently.

More recently, Chelsea have been criticised for lacking experience and buying players that have resale value. It has left Liam Rosenior with a very talented squad, but players that lack a sense of leadership.

It is easy to forget that Moises Caicedo is only 24, Reece James is just 26, and Cole Palmer is only 23. Chelsea’s transfer policy is certainly garnering criticism, and Juan Mata was asked what he thought.

Juan Mata defends Chelsea, claims other clubs are the same

Fans have been calling for BlueCo and Chelsea to sign some older players in the summer, especially at centre-back. Chelsea have struggled in the middle of defence since Thiago Silva left the club in 2024.

Speaking to TalkSPORT on Thursday morning, former Chelsea playmaker Mata was asked by Gabby Agbonlahor if he agreed with Chelsea’s work in the transfer market. Mata, in a way, defended Chelsea.

“I don’t think it’s only Chelsea. It is something that has changed in football. Every club wants to sign young players because they have the potential to become better and to grow market value,” Mata said.

“Before, clubs wanted realities, players that were ready-made and established. That is something that is happening, but I don’t think it’s only happening at Chelsea, but generally in football,” the Spaniard added.

Reports claim Chelsea could now change their approach

Centre-back is a good example to use, as the Blues boast a huge number of options but none of them are above the age of 28. Tosin is closest, while Levi Colwill, an experienced player, has been injured all season.

Chelsea might be being linked with young defenders like Honest Ahanor and Tylel Tati, but reports now say that BlueCo are preparing to change their approach. They are more open to signing some older stars.

Alongside some young options – with Jeremy Jacquet targeted in January – Chelsea have also been touted with Kim Min-jae, Jules Kounde, and Marcos Senesi. Fans are hoping an older head comes in.
