Ex-Chelsea midfielder Gus Poyet thinks Real Madrid star Federico Valverde would be a perfect signing for Liverpool.
The Uruguayan international possesses many different qualities, but Poyet believes he could be deployed as a “Makelele-style” player in the middle of the park for the Reds:

“I would love to see Federico Valverde play in England. Since Fabinho left Liverpool, they’ve lacked a world-class box-to-box midfielder. Alexis Mac Allister has shown his class this season, but he could use some defensive reinforcement alongside him and someone who can change the game at both ends of the pitch.”
“Valverde operates all over the pitch, can run for 90 minutes and has great ball distribution. It would be difficult for Liverpool to prise Valverde away from Real Madrid; he came through their second team and has risen through the ranks to become the brilliant player that he is now.”
“Whether they could offer him an attractive enough deal to come to England, I’m not sure, but Liverpool need a ‘Makelele-style’ player who can strengthen their core and Valverde could be a great fit.”
What are the chances of Valverde moving to England?
The 27-year-old has started 34 times for Real this season, and he has captained the La Liga giants on a regular basis, so there is next to no chance that Liverpool will make a move for him. Buy from the Foco Liverpool Collection here.
Although Poyet would use him in midfield, Valverde has played the majority of his minutes on the right flank, being deployed as either a fullback or a winger.
Are Liverpool looking to sign a midfielder?
Arne Slot’s side have been linked with a few central midfield players in recent weeks, but you would not class them as Claude Makelele types.
AZ Alkmaar’s Kees Smit has been mentioned as a potential target on more than one occasion. He has been likened to Pedri by Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman.
Ajax’s Sean Steur is another name that has cropped up this week, but he is pretty similar to Smit.
