Leam Richardson - 'Liverpool conceded 5 goals in 90+ minutes to lose games'

Reading FC are preparing to host Bradford City at the Select Car Leasing Stadium on Saturday after back to back draws which saw the Royals concede last minute equalisers.

The last time the Royals faced Bradford, The Bantams won 2-0 at the University of Bradford Stadium in December - which saw the return of Jack Marriott to the squad after an injury spell.

Looking ahead to the match on Saturday, Richardson said: "I think I said before we played them at their place.

"Obviously, we were still in very, very infancy of our time together. You know, I think Graham's been there over two years now, been recruiting within that time for a certain style, a certain kind of productivity and I know a few players from there three or four who's worked with myself.

"So, yeah, I think they've been going ahead nicely and I think Saturday will be a really good game."

Bradford are currently fourth in League One only separated by goal difference with Bolton Wanderers who are in third. Bobby Pointon, Anotni Sarcevic and Stephen Humphrys currently have 22 goals between the three of them.

When asked about the importance of Bradford's forwards to their success, Richardson said: "Absolutely. I mean, they're the number 10s.

"They've got Kayden Jackson, Paul Mullin, Stephen Humphrys, Ethan Wheatley from Manchester United. You know, they've got a plethora of strikers. So, yeah, they've been recruiting very well.

"They've got a really, really healthy squad going forward and I don't think it'd be a surprise to them or anybody else where they're sitting at the table."

When Richardson was asked about the process on how opposition reports with players is usually handled, he said: "I think nowadays players want a lot of information purely off the back of all the media, you know, the Sky Sports and the pundits, etc. but they're no different.

"A lot of them now are studiers of the game. So, we have a lot of collective team meetings regarding opposition, how we can get better on reflections of how we play. We have a lot of unit meetings and we have a lot of individual meetings as well. So, we try and cover all bases because I think you've got to be very mindful that people learn in different ways as well.

"People learn inside the media suite here, the people learn by sitting down actually watching themselves. People work and learn more by outside doing. So, we try and cover all bases."

On the discussion concerning the importance of picking up points in the remaining games of the season Richardson said :"That's why we love it so much, isn't it? Because it's coming to that time of year where, you know, results are massive anyway but all of a sudden, I think you come to the last 10 games and people start then alluding to 'oh this is a massive game'.

"Well, we try and portray that anyway because it's our next game but yeah, once the final stretch comes, I think around Easter time, people then start jockeying for places a little bit and really start looking at what squad they've got available and how they can tackle each and every game as positively as possible."

On injuries he said: "It's a season, isn't it? So, it's always to-ing and fro-ing with that. It's a relentless league. It's a relentless business that we're in and it's important, like I said, when I first came in, you know, a lot of things happened in the summer that we're trying to still kind of challenge us now and that's one of the things that we're trying to address."

The Royals have now conceded goals in 90 plus minutes for back to back games, with Bolton Wanderers scoring through Mason Burstow in the 90+6' minutes and Port Vale scoring through Everton loanee Martin Sherif in the exact same minute.

When asked on the importance of seeing the importance of encouraging the players to highlight that fixture hasn't been lost, Richardson said: "I think always after games, it's always difficult, isn't it? Because people want to interview after game and emotions are running high. Everybody's got opinions based on not very much, just their opinion. Not really many facts to go with that opinion and that's why we love football.

"They're isolated [the goals], but they're collectively together because they're in the same week, you know, and they're in the same moments of games as we're in the 90 plus minutes.

"I think if you look at Liverpool, I think they've conceded five goals in 90 plus minutes to lose games and they're current Premier League champions.

"It's no excuse to do it. We don't intend to do it but one positive, we put ourselves in that winning position to do that because if roles were reversed and we scored two goals in the 90 plus minutes Tuesday, Saturday, you know, we'd be all thinking, wow, they're great results.

"But because of the moments, because we put ourselves in front, that's just life you know, we've got to live with that and we've got to be better in those moments."

He added: "That's the emotion, we get judged by emotional results a lot of the time not the collective picture with the factual evidence, but that's part and parcel of it.

"For instance, if on Saturday we conceded in the 68th minute and we went on and, you know, managed to get a draw away from home, we moved up a place, we had another point to our tally, unbeaten in so many games, scored again away from home.

"It's all positive, but because of the manner and people's perception that, well, it's Port Vale, so you should win but you can't change that perception. That's just human nature."

Since Leam Richardson was appointed as Reading FC manager, he has managed to move the squad from 19th to 7th a few points away from the play-offs. Under his stewardship the squad has only lost one game in the last eight match-ups.

Speaking about how he sees his time at Reading so far, he said: "With all due respect, we came in November without a pre-season, without a recruitment window, taking a team who was and a group of people, and a club who was really low on confidence in a really challenging situation from 19th, you know, averaging less than a point a game, which is relegation form.

"To turn that round as quick as we have to now, everybody's talking about the other end of the table, which is great, that the players have bought into everything.

"I think we're averaging just under two goals a game, scored four, and moved from 19th to 7th outside the playoff positions with the game in hand. So, yeah, I think all positives, if you want to look at it that way and I think, you know, moving forward, it will keep going in that direction."

Richardson has been emphasising the issues with fitness levels within the squad since he joined the club as manager in November.

When asked if the levels have improved he said: "I try and be as honest and as open as I can. I'd never individually hang anybody out to dry, because it's a tough job.

"Everybody does it their own way, everybody's got their own kind of detail on what they want to do. You know, within the moment that we came in in November, we've got to be very mindful, small squad, and you can't push them too much because we've got games to play and games to win but I would like to think this time next year we'll be in a lot more, a lot healthier place and a lot, we'll be a lot fitter as a group."
