Liverpool aim to boost their Champions League hopes as they host relegation-threatened West Ham United at Anfield on Saturday. The Hammers seek revenge after a 2-0 loss at the London Stadium three months ago.
Liverpool have been dramatic in the Premier League this season, scoring or conceding more goals in the 90th minute or later than any other team (13), with nine of those affecting the result.
Last weekend, Alexis Mac Allister netted in the 97th minute to secure a 1-0 win at Nottingham Forest. A year ago, Liverpool were 12 points clear at the top; now they sit sixth, level with Chelsea and three points behind Manchester United.
They are seeking a third consecutive 1-0 Premier League win following victories over Forest and Sunderland. The Reds have a strong record against West Ham, losing just once in their last 19 top-flight meetings (W15 D3), including seven wins in the last eight since a 3-2 defeat in November 2021.
Jeremie Frimpong returned to full training on Thursday, but Florian Wirtz remains a doubt after missing the Forest game with a back injury. Slot described the injury as minor, but Wirtz’s participation on Saturday is uncertain.
Slot said: “We don’t think it is very serious, but he felt his back too much during the warm-up to start. He wasn’t able to be 100 per cent or even close to 100 per cent. I think after being in this league for six, seven or eight months, he now understands no matter how good you are on the ball, you need to be 100 per cent at this level.
“So, we decided not to play him. We hope and expect he will be able to be with us again next week but you never know how things work out.”
Wirtz was absent from training at the AXA Training Centre. However, with one final session scheduled on Friday, there is still a chance he could be cleared to face West Ham United.
