The Kansas City Chiefs will operate as if Patrick Mahomes will be healthy for Week 1. They brought back Eric Bieniemy as offensive coordinator, and they now need to give him the weapons he needs to get them back to the mountaintop.
That means bolstering the running back room. Kareem Hunt and Isiah Pacheco will be free agents, and rookie Brashard Smith was more of a pass-catching down last season.
Considering that, Dan Graziano and Ben Solak of ESPN chose the Chiefs as one of the potential destinations for Miami Dolphins star De’Von Achane. While the Dolphins haven’t expressed interest in letting him go, their latest roster move suggests they might be open to business.
The Chiefs Could Make A Run At De’Von Achane
“The league seems to believe the Dolphins are in a full rebuild, which means they’re getting calls on all of their star players. My sense is that they’re far more likely to extend Achane’s contract than to listen to those trade offers, but in their situation, you answer the phone when it rings,” Graziano wrote.
Achane is one of the most explosive running backs in the game. He led the league with a whopping 5.7 yards per carry, totalling 1,350 rushing yards and eight touchdowns for Mike McDaniel’s team.
He’s slated to make $5.9 million and will be on a contract year next season. The Chiefs could sign him to an extension almost right away to bolster a running game that averaged 106.6 rushing yards per game last season, ranked 25th in the league.
It might take a big haul to get Achane to Missouri. That said, Achane had more rushing yards on his own than both of the Chiefs’ leading rushers (611 for Hunt and 462 for Pacheco), so he’s more than worth the gamble.
