The New England Patriots may be on the verge of losing defensive tackle Khyiris Tonga, who will become a free agent this offseason. They should consider pursuing D.J. Reader as a potential replacement.
Reader has been in the NFL since 2016, playing four seasons with the Houston Texans, four seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals and two years with the Detroit Lions.
During the recent season, Reader performed well with the Lions, participating in 17 games and recording 28 combined tackles. Pro Football Focus ranked him as the 33rd-best interior defensive lineman out of 134 players.
Reader excelled in pass rushing last season, earning a PFF ranking of 24th in that category. He also performed solidly in run defense, finishing 36th overall.
The Patriots would be smart to consider bringing in Reader if they decide not to bring Tonga back. He could be the player who can hold down the defensive line effectively.
Reader also has a connection to former defensive coordinator Terrell Williams, who served as the Lions' defensive line coach during Reader's first season in Detroit in 2024.
