Nahshon Wright will hit free agency after one season with the Bears

After getting multiple head coaching interviews, Chris Shula will return for his third season as the defensive coordinator with the Los Angeles Rams.

Head coach Sean McVay said the team will take the next step with the DC now that the team has two years of “inventory” with Shula as the defensive playcaller.

The Rams’ defense had some notable names, mainly among the defensive front, that allowed an average of 20.4 points per game, the 10th-lowest in the league.

With free agency coming up in around two weeks, Los Angeles could strengthen the biggest concern on defense: the cornerback position.

The Los Angeles Rams have not had a Pro Bowl cornerback since Jalen Ramsey was with the franchise in the 2022 season.

LA’s defense was in the bottom half of the league in passing yards, allowing an average of 216.7 per game.

With the offseason around the corner, the Rams can go out and bolster the cornerback room and attempt to make another Super Bowl run.

Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report named all the “perfect” free agent signings for all 32 teams in the NFL, naming Chicago Bears cornerback Nahshon Wright as the perfect signing for Chris Shula’s defense.

“The Rams have tried to find a bargain at the cornerback position and paid for it. Investing in Nahshon Wright in free agency would increase the resources they devote to the position without going overboard,” Ballentine wrote.

“The 27-year-old put together a breakout season with the Bears this year. He racked up five interceptions while starting 16 games and limiting quarterbacks to an 86.8 passer rating when targeted.”

Wright started more games in his one season with the Bears than in his previous four seasons combined (3), recording 5 interceptions (one returned for a pick-six) and 11 pass deflections in the Windy City, which earned him a Pro Bowl nod.

No member of the Los Angeles Rams defense had 5 interceptions, with the next two closest both having 3 INTs.

One of the concerns regarding Wright is the 800+ passing yards he allowed in the 2025 season, but Wright’s numbers could change under the wing of head coach Sean McVay and DC Chris Shula.

Former first-round pick Emmanuel Forbes is entering the fourth-year of his rookie contract, with the Rams having the decision to pick up his fifth-year option. If LA doesn’t, then bringing Nahshon Wright on a long-term deal makes sense.

Pro Football Focus ranked the cornerback as the 10th-best cornerback available for the upcoming free agency.

With the numbers Nahshon Wright put up, he will be a highly sought-after free agent in just a matter of weeks, but that doesn’t close the door on his return to the Chicago Bears.

“I had a great season in Chicago due to the way we played,” Wright said. “I would love to be back in Chicago, but I don’t necessarily know what’s going to happen.”

“There’s been some conversation… I know they contacted my agent and we have a meeting scheduled. No contract details have been discussed or anything, but I think there is some interest.”

Spotrac projects Wright to get a three-year, $50 million contract this upcoming offseason, making it hard for the Bears to retain the cornerback, as the team has a negative cap space hit.

This allows the Los Angeles Rams to come in and snag Nahshon right for the 2026 season, who currently have around $40 million in cap space.
