Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Tez Johnson, a seventh-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft out of the University of Oregon, entered the league with a compelling personal story attached to his name. Two months before he was drafted, he proposed to his longtime girlfriend, Laila Thompson-Wainer, with the couple announcing the engagement publicly on Mar 3, 2025.
Now, Thompson-Wainer has publicly accused Johnson of sending direct messages to a former girlfriend on the exact day he proposed. She shared alleged screenshots inside a TikTok video that spread quickly on Thursday.

The TikTok shows Thompson-Wainer laying out both sides of proposal day, the part that seemed perfect and what she says was happening elsewhere that same day.
Thompson-Wainer is a University of Washington communications graduate who has held roles with both the Seattle Seahawks and the NHL’s Seattle Kraken in sports communications. She did not just describe the alleged messages. She displayed the screenshots directly on screen to make her case.
“It was a beautiful venue in the hills and I remember walking down this driveway and I hear music and I see this gorgeous floral setup right out of my dreams that I had as a child,” she said in the TikTok video. “He gets down on one knee, he puts the ring on my finger. I just remember saying, ‘Oh, my cheeks hurt so much from smiling.’ I was so happy. I remember just looking back and being like, ‘This is gonna be one of the happiest days of my life.’ And we ended up going to the beach after, did a little beach photo shoot.”
The screenshots she put on screen tell a different version of the same day. A message timestamped Feb 19 at 9:09 a.m. reads: “What ever team I visit we can just meet there and when I come down there, I need to see you like idk what else to say I think we have to.”
Johnson has not publicly responded to the allegations.
His adoptive brother and former Oregon teammate, Bo Nix’s wife, Izzy had reshared his proposal photos on Instagram in Mar 2025, writing: “God is good (Laila) is joining the family!!!”
Johnson’s reputation coming into the league was clean and likable. This complicates that image considerably.
Johnson is entering his second NFL season with real on-field results behind him. Whether he responds to Thompson-Wainer’s claims or not, the video has already reached a wide audience. Athletes at his level learn that personal situations can become public ones quickly. The offseason is long, and this one is starting with questions he has not yet answered.
