Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong faces up to six weeks out with a hamstring injury, missing key Champions League and La Liga matches.
BARCELONA: Frenkie de Jong will be sidelined for up to six weeks with a hamstring injury. The Barcelona midfielder sustained the issue during a training session.
The club confirmed the Dutch international injured his right hamstring and faces a five to six week recovery period. This timeline rules him out of several crucial fixtures.
De Jong will miss the Champions League last 16 tie against either Paris Saint-Germain or Newcastle. He is also set to be absent for La Liga matches against Villarreal, Athletic Bilbao, Sevilla and Rayo Vallecano.
The 28-year-old will be unavailable for next Tuesday’s Spanish Cup semi-final second leg. Barcelona trail Atletico Madrid 4-0 from the first leg.
His absence extends to the March international window. De Jong will miss the Netherlands’ pre-World Cup friendlies against Norway and Ecuador.
Barcelona currently lead La Liga by just one point over rivals Real Madrid. They host Villarreal this Saturday without their influential midfielder.
