Rennes provide official injury update on Jeremy Jacquet after £60m Liverpool signing as…

Liverpool will sign Jeremy Jacquet in the summer transfer window after agreeing a deal with Rennes.

Rennes are still in the dark about whether Jeremy Jacquet will make a return to action this season before joining Liverpool.

The Reds agreed to sign the centre-back for a fee of up to £60 million in the summer transfer window. Jacquet has been one of the standout defenders in Ligue 1, with Liverpool splashing out a significant fee for the 20-year-old.

It was agreed that Jacquet would remain at Rennes for the remainder of the 2025-26 campaign to help his progress. The Red and Blacks are pursuing European qualification. However, Jacquet suffered a shoulder injury in a 3-0 defeat by RC Lens on 7 February. The centre-back’s issue was described as ‘serious’ by former head coach Hebib Beye.

Jacquet missed Rennes’ past two games and is ruled out of their clash against Toulouse on Saturday. Franck Haise, recently appointed Rennes boss, said: "I don't know exactly yet. Jérémy is undergoing treatment, rehabilitation, he's working in the gym, that's where we are at the moment.”

According to Ouest France, Jacquet could require surgery amid uncertainty he might not play again this season. It has yet to be confirmed whether the France under-21 international will require to go under the knife.

But shoulder problems have been an issue for Jacquet during his career. He picked up a similar injury during a loan spell at Clermont and it is said that ‘when such a weakness exists, the risk of multiple relapses is higher, hence the option of surgery’. Liverpool are in ‘close contact with Rennes to discuss the medical process’.

On the deal to sign Jacquet, Liverpool head coach Arne Slot said: “Very pleasing, of course, because first of all he is a very big talent – and maybe even more than ‘only’ a talent, but we speak about talent because of his age, of course.

“Second of all because we weren’t the only one interested in him, so another big compliment for the people that are working every single day so hard to sign players, that we were able to sign such a big talent.

“And [it is] another example of the model we are using at this club: so, young, very talented players, sometimes in the start of their career, sometimes already a little bit a few years into their career, but always players that are young and can improve us and help us for the short, but definitely also for the long term.

“We have signed a lot of them recently and I’ve said many times that the mid- to long-term, but even the short-term, future of this club is in a very, very, very good place.”
