Elsewhere, Manchester City drew Real Madrid yet again, while a tie against Norwegian minnows Bodo/Glimt was their other possibility.
For the other English sides, Arsenal landed Bayer Leverkusen, Liverpool will play Galatasaray and Tottenham were drawn against Atletico Madrid.
All six Premier League teams advanced through the league phase to make up more than a third of the sides left in the competition.
Newcastle were the only English club forced to go through the play-offs after Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham all finished inside the top eight and progressed straight to the round of 16.

Should they progress, the Gunners will face the winners of Bodo/Glimt vs Sporting in the quarter-finals in what appears to be a very favourable draw.
Newcastle, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid or Tottenham will then await in the semi-finals.
On the other side of the draw, Man City and Real Madrid will renew what has become a regular European rivalry in recent years.
The two sides have been drawn against each other in the Champions League for the sixth successive season, having done battle 11 times in the last seven years.
For Chelsea, it is a repeat of the Club World Cup final against PSG in July - which the Blues won 3-0.
Newcastle will be out for revenge when they take on Barcelona, who beat them 2-1 at St James' Park back in September thanks to two goals from Marcus Rashford.
And the same is true for Liverpool, who lost 1-0 against upcoming opponents Galatasaray in the league phase.
