However, there is another side to the story. Between 2015 and 2020, the west London side were stuck in what many called a Round of 16 curse. They were eliminated at that stage four straight times. They fell to heavyweights such as PSG, Barcelona, and Bayern Munich. Those exits still hurt and raised questions about whether the club had lost its edge in Europe.
This campaign feels different in some ways. Rosenior’s men are back in the competition after a couple of years away. Their recent FIFA Club World Cup success has added belief inside the dressing room. Young players are gaining confidence and showing their promise. Also, the manager is trying to build a team that can compete with Europe’s elite again.
Nonetheless, Rooney believes experience in the latter stages of Champions League matters. Quarter finals bring another level of pressure as well. Chelsea may have the talent, but consistency over two legs against Europe’s best is a different challenge.
