ESPN Predicts Patriots To Sign Former Dolphins First-Round Pick

The New England Patriots had just 35 sacks as a team last regular season, and adding to the pass rush could be a focus this offseason.

There are plenty of talented players available in the draft, but free agency also provides the team with an avenue to add to its pass rush. ESPN's Aaron Schatz predicted the Patriots would sign Jaelan Phillips in free agency to bolster their pass rush.

"Phillips had two sacks and 27 pressures after he was traded to the Eagles from Miami at midseason," wrote Schatz. "His 12.4% pass rush win rate ranked 24th among qualifying edge rushers. Phillips could replace free agent K'Lavon Chaisson and/or make a good partner for Harold Landry III."

The Patriots may prioritize re-signing Chaisson before looking at external options. However, that should not stop them from adding to their pass rush. Phillips was a first-round pick by the Miami Dolphins in the 2021 NFL Draft. He had 15.5 sacks in his first two seasons for the Patriots’ rival, playing in 34 games. He played in just 12 games the following two years.

After some injuries derailed him for two years, he played in 17 games last season. He played in nine games for the Dolphins and eight games for the Eagles. He had five sacks across 17 games.

His sack numbers won't blow teams away in free agency, but teams know he is a talented player who can be a force when healthy. He is not on the same level as some superstar pass rushers, and he has never had a double-digit sack season. However, he could be a cheap, valuable addition to the Patriots' pass rush group.
